When Spain finally won back Granada from the Arabs in 1492, the first distillate of sugar cane became known as Aguadiente de Caña and the first official record of a serious Spanish rum dates back almost 200 years to 1828 when a Motrillian rum won first prize at the Spanish Industry Exhibition in Madrid. The city of Motril, situated along the Mediterranean coast, was the “Sugar Capital” of Europe for over 800 years and here you can visit the Pre-industrial Sugar Museum where the entire history with Cane Palace, Milling area, Press room and Refining rooms are set up for display.
